July is Here!

The fourth is in a few days and our activities are in full swing.  One project is complete,
and another is in the works.  I will share them with you once everything is complete.
I have many photos yet to download and share with you, but during the summer when the kids
are at home and there are activities to be part of every weekend, it's not easy to sit and post.
I know it is probably the same with you.

I am going to take a few weeks off from posting and will see you here on the first week of August.
I hope that you enjoy your Fourth of July and have a blessed summer.  See you then!

Blue Birds and Garden Life

Adorable little blue bird!
yard8 (10)
yard8 (6)
It has been raining on and off the last couple of days, but I managed to get a few shots of the
garden and our yearly visitors.  The photos are not clear due to rain drops, but I still wanted to share
our beautiful little neighbors with you.  Every year in June our little blue bird guests fly over to
lay blue eggs in their nests and they are almost ready to hatch.
Do you remember this post?  We managed to get photos that time of the little ones in their nests.

The blue birds have had challenges this year with other birds.  The other birds get territorial in
our backyard, so when they see unwanted guests, they try to keep them away.  But the little
blue birds work as a team and the female and male, protect their nest and watch over eachother,
from what I call, the bully birds.

I also posted my gardenias which I left out from this post last year.  You can see how
many flower buds they grow and how the weight makes them droop.  These flowers
fill the back patio with a marvelous fragrance and are as potent as the Jasmines on the other
side of our yard.  I have been caring for these plants this year from the very first sign of the last frost.
Last year they were all malign with spots, desease and mites.  I've been using
preventative and remedies for plants to help them maintain healthy foliage this year.
The biggest challenges have been the gardenias and the hydrangeas.

Another bush loved by butterflies is the Butterfly Bush or Milk Weed above.  It has a faint
sweet scent and it attracts hummingbirds as well.  This is a hardy plant and grows back every year.
It is a low maintenance bush, something I love.
The clay urn you see here is the fountain I created last summer, you may view the tutorials here to create your own.  The birds enjoy it especially on hot summer days.
How is your garden growing this year?

How to Make Sushi Rolls

At our house, we love to eat sushi.  It is one of our favorite things to eat during the summer.
I finally learned how to make sushi & had loads of fun making it for my little family.
Today I will be sharing with you a simple sushi recipe that has no raw fish only imitation crab
and the rest are veggies.  In the sushi world we tend to call this a "California Roll".
To make this you will need:

Tip: Cover bamboo mat with plastic wrap to prevent rice form sticking to mat.
For instructions on making sushi rice click this link or here.
Making sushi rice is important to have good sushi.  It needs to be tasty and sticky to roll.
Add avocado too!
  1. Cover bamboo mat with plastic wrap to prevent rice from sticking to it.
  2. Take out a sushi seaweed sheet and cut across the sheet to make two smaller sheets. Tip: Using one full sheet will make your rolls too big.
  3. Place the shiny side of the sea weed sheet faced down over your plastic wrapped bamboo mat.
  4. Wet your fingers to begin placing rice on top of the sheet. Tip: Wet fingers help prevent rice from sticking to your fingers.
  5. Cover sheet evenly and do not overload with rice. Tip: Do not press rice hard, you do not want to mash your rice.
  6. At this point, you may sprinkle sesame seeds over the rice, it adds flavor and texture.
  7. Turn your sushi & rice sheet over to the opposite side. (Don't worry, it won't fall off)
  8. Make sure your sheet is lined up with the edge of the bamboo mat for easy rolling.
  9. To this side of the sheet, add your veggies and crab meat.  Line them up evenly as seen above.
  10. Once you have your veggies in place, start rolling your sushi. Leave about an inch or so out of the end and tuck your sushi in as seen above, then finish rolling the whole sushi roll. (This helps prevent the sushi from falling apart).
  11. Tap the ends of the sushi so it is even and flat.
  12. Once you have your roll wet your knife and slice your roll into half.
  13. Then cut your rolls about an inch and a half wide, one sushi roll will make 6 sushi rolls/bites.
  14. Repeat steps for more sushi rolls.
You may refrigerate them for company later or enjoy right away.
Happy Eats!
